tuXlabs

tuXlabs : tuX - mascot of Linux and Labs - computer learning centres A project was initiated in 2002 in Nooitgedacht Primary School in Cape Town to implement open source software computer labs in schools aka the Open Source Learning Centre(OSLC). A 2nd school was initiated which was funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation. Based on the early success indicators it was decided to initiated a larger program to document the learnings to develop a model for others to replicate. In 2003 the tuXlab Team was established, lead by Hilton Theunissen founder of OSLC, whom was supported by the School Linux User Group (SLUG initiated in 2003) to establish over 100 tuXlabs. SLUG during 2003 -2005 had several chapters nationally and had a volunteer community of over 500 members. tuXlabs run completely on open source software. The Linux Terminal Server Project(ltsp) was adopted to drive down cost and incorporate decommissioned equipment. Early version of the tuXlab network used K12ltsp.org, in early 2005 the Skubuntu was developed internally and used in all tuXlabs. Skubuntu was showcased in May 2005 at the first Edubuntu Summit held in London, UK. A tuXlab Howto was developed by Upfront Systems [1]with a 2nd Version, tuXlab Cookbook, to follow which was developed by the tuXlab Team supported by Sean Wheller. Much of this work was included in the Edubuntu Howto manual by ex-tuXlab Team members like Jonathan Cater and William Van De Leij. In 2006 tuXlabs switch to a customised version of Edubuntu and continue to run using the Ubuntu Distribution. The current version is developed by volunteers from Wizzy.org using Ubuntu, Edubuntu and customised code. Other then the normal Edubuntu stack, the server provide mail and web server services. Support to tuXlabs is sponsored by Inkululeko Technology, www.inkululeko.co.za. Inkululeko was initiated in July 2006 as an exit initiative from the Shuttleworth Foundation of the tuXlabs Program. Inkululeko continue to share it's experience and ventured into projects like Digital Doorway, iLABS and others.
